Looking Back at the 2012-2013 School Year

Greetings members-

The 2012-2013 school year has been an amazing year for TAWLS. Beginning in fall 2012, we began with a vision of FORWARD TOGETHER, striving to embrace UNITY for TAWLS. Beside teachers, UNITY was achieved by working together with the community and district staff. Recent legislation from Columbus continues to attack public education making it crucial that we remain united in our commitments to our students and district by keeping the strong collaboration and communication alive within our community and administration. This year we have accomplished:

1) CONTRACT – Negotiated a 2 year contract that includes a 3% increase to the base for next year
2) COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION: Participation in the Labor Day Parade, which will continue again in 2013-2014 with a new TAWLS banner
3) BUILDING VISITS: Building visits by TAWLS president and negotiating team members to address concerns and connect you to the process.
4) COMMUNICATION: Began use of a new website with access to a TAWLS wear store, text alerts, and TAWLS electronic newsletter to communicate important events to members (A spring/summer issue will be coming soon!)
5) BUILDING COMMUNITY AWARENESS: TAWLS 50th anniversary billboards, meeting with AFL-CIO executive secretary, bi-monthly UNISERV and OEA meetings, attendance at meetings on Right to Work and receptions given by political candidates and prospective candidates.
6) ACTIVITIES: TAWLS social activities included: The Candy Budd-Crowley Amazing Race, Mud Hens Night, Calamity Day drawings, Carmels & OB’ socials, New Teacher Luncheon and Gifts, and the Christmas/Holiday Gift Exchange at Sidelines.
7) CELEBRATING 50 years of TAWLS: Recognizing TAWLS through a proclamation from the mayor of Toledo and OEA president Pat Frost-Brooks at the Spring RA, Anniversary Billboards, TAWLS store items, and celebrations with past presidents at the Spring Banquet, special festivities at the Spring Banquet, a special TAWLS anniversary logo, and 50th anniversary travel mugs (which will be delivered to you soon)

Looking ahead to next year and based on survey results we will continue with our vision of FORWARD TOGETHER to achieve UNITY by maintaining and strengthening the association through: community participation & awareness, building visits, communications, and activities. Of course there are some new items on the horizon: establishing a Progressive Discipline Policy Committee, committee meetings for OTES, Building Representative Handbook, Building Representative Training, and options for a Peer/Member Mediation program. It is through your support and activism that allows us to achieve so many wonderful things and look at options for the future.

THANKS FOR A WONDERFUL YEAR! ALL OF YOU HAVE AND WILL CONTINUE TO MAKE TAWLS A STRONG AND SUCCESSFUL ASSOCIATION!

Cheers-
Christopher Hodnicki
